Theory and Hazard Perception Test

When you have passed your theory test, you can apply for your practical test. The theory test is made up of two parts, 50 multiple choice questions and a hazard perception test. You will need to pass both parts.

 

Theory and Hazard Perception training is available to you via your instructor and our Theory Test Pro website. Our Theory Test Pro enables you to complete short tests, section test , full tests and hazard perception tests. There are 14 sections to test your driving knowledge - Accidents, Alertness, Attitude, Documents, Hazard Awareness, Motorway Rules, Other Types of Vehicle, Road and Traffic Signs, Rules of the Road, Safety and your Vehiocle, Safety Margins, Vehicle Handling, Vehicle Loading,and Vulnerable Road Users. To pass your theory test you need to answer correctly 43 out of 50 questions.

 

Driving test candidates will no longer be able to use foreign language voiceovers and interpreters on their test from 7 April 2014. Click here for more information from the DVSA.

 

Our Theory Test Pro also has Hazard Perception videos. There are 14 clips, 1 of the clips has 2 hazards. The clips feature everyday road scenes, a developing hazard is something that may result in you having to take some action, such as changing speed, direction or making you stop. What you need to do is identify these as early as possible to get as high a score as possible (max 5 points per clip). To pass your hazard perception test, you need to score 44 points out of 75.

 

82% of theory test pro users pass the theory test first time, the UK average is 41%.

To cancel or reschedule your test, you need to give 3 full clear working days notice. From 1 April 2014, candidates will be able to ask for a rebooking at short notice with no charge if they can’t take their test because of a medically certified illness, a bereavement or school exams. DVSA will also continue to offer a refund or new test date to serving members of the armed forces who are called for duty

 

 

TOP TIPS

 

  • Read the Highway Code and Driving the Essential Skills. Complete short tests and section tests before tackling mock tests on our Theory Test Pro.
  • Nerves play a role on your theory test. At home consistently score over 46 out of 50 on the theory section, and over 55 on your hazard perception and you are ready.
  • Arrive 20 minutes early and visit the toilet before you go in!
  • Don't forget your documents - you cannot take a test if you cannot present both parts of your driving licence (photocard and counterpart).

Practical Driving Test

 

The practical test is designed to see if you can drive safely in different road and traffic conditions, know the Highway Code and can show this through your driving ability. Your Examiner will ask you:

 

  • to sign an occupancy and insurance declaration.
  • if you would like your instructor to join you.
  • to read a number plate 20 metres away.
  • 2 safety check questions. (Click here for more information)
  • to follow the road ahead unless the road or the Examiner directs you otherwise.
  • to perform 1 manoeuvre (Turn in the Road, Reverse around a corner to the left, Reverse Park or Bay Park.
  • to drive independently for 10 minutes. (either following road signs to a destination or the Examiners directions).
  • there is a 1 in 3 chance they could ask you to perform an Emergency Stop.

The DVSA are introducing a new Driving Test from 4th December 2017. Click here to read about it. The basic changes are:

 

  • new manoeuvres - Park into a parking bay forwards & reverse out and park on the right of the road, reverse 2 car lengths & then drive away. Turn in the Road and Reverse around a corner are axed from the test.
  • drive independently for 20 minutes (either following satnav, road signs to a destination or the Examiners directions).

TOP TIPS

 

  • Inform your instructor of any pre-test routines you have (smokers may need a cigarette, you may like chocolate, you like to arrive early to think over your test, you may like to arrive 1 minute before the start so you are not waiting around).
  • On your test, don't look at the examiner's assessment sheet. It will put you off. Don't worry if your examiner's pen is making marks, he has administration to do, it may not be a driving fault.
  • Don't forget your documents - you cannot take a test if you cannot present both parts of your driving licence (photocard and counterpart). You may also be asked for your Theory Test Pass Certificate and confirmation of appointment letter/e-mail.
